There’s no denying that 2017 was a year of dramatic cuts and colours. Waist-long extensions, galaxy colours and intricate braids were some of the most requested styles at salons in Abu Dhabi and around the world. Even A-listers embraced the trend for wild hairstyles and we saw some dramatic transformations like Ariana Grande’s icy-rose shade and Nicki Minaj’s incredible extensions (one swish of which became one of the year’s funniest viral trends!)
Whilst we’re sure there’ll still be some surprises in store from the stars, 2018 ushers in the year we return to our roots with no-fuss styles and natural colours enhanced with complexion-brightening highlights. We’ve hit the books, scoured the catwalks and talked to some of the best hairdressers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi to bring you a list of the top five styles we think everyone will be asking for.
Low maintenance fringes
Big, blunt fringes were at their peak popularity a few years ago but, even with their boho-chic reputation, they were anything but simple. Anyone who tried this style can attest to the neverending battle that keeping it smooth and neat was. Now, we’re seeing a rise in no-fuss fringes that work with your natural texture. Think soft, wispy strands and centre parts for an easygoing style perfect for the “cool-girl-on-the-go” look.
If you’ve always wanted to take the plunge and crop your locks, now is the time to do it. Pixie cuts are less severe in 2018 and fewer people are choosing to go super short with theirs. We’re taking pixies a little longer and embracing natural curls for styles that include some extra volume and a few face-framing layers for a softer look (that’s a bit more forgiving if you aren’t blessed with Emma Watson’s cheekbones!)
The bob and lob are showing no signs of abating in popularity. Thousands of women have discovered the universally flattering style over the past couple of years and more still are set to embrace the trend at salons in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The great thing about bobs is their versatility. Regardless of your natural texture, you can find a cut that suits your personal style. Bobs can be sleek and elegant, cool and edgy or rough and simple — it’s entirely up to you.
Maintaining the smooth, blunt cut that’s been so popular recently (think Kylie Jenner’s 2016 sleek cut) is surprisingly tough. There’s really only one way to achieve that look — high heat and plenty of serums for shine. In 2018, we’re embracing the shag cut in a big way. Think loose layers, plenty of texture and natural volume. This sort of cut looks good after just a rough blow dry and some texturising spray, so it’s ideal for women looking for an easygoing style that won’t require too much upkeep.
So this may not be a new cut, but it’s a trend that’s having a serious moment in the spotlight and we’d be crazy not to mention it! If the idea of hair accessories conjures up images of butterfly clips, spray-on glitter and scrunchies, you’re not alone. Rest assured that we’ve moved on from the early 2000s and this new wave of hair accessories involves far more grown up items like silk bows, pearl encrusted clips and statement headbands. If you want to take the trend all the way, why not try a crown like those seen in the Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana SS18 shows?
If you’re feeling inspired by these trends, why not book an appointment at one of the award-winning roots Salons in Abu Dhabi or Dubai today where one of our expert stylists can transform your look for 2018? We can’t wait to hear from you!
