The beginner’s guide to nail extensions

Long, beautiful nails are the pinnacle of femininity, beauty and grace. There’s no denying that having your nails done makes you feel like a million dollars and many women consider regular visits to nail salons in Dubai an integral part of their beauty regime. But what if your natural nails just aren’t up to scratch? For many of us, the daily wear and tear that our nails go through can leave them dry and broken – not exactly the sort of thing a quick buff and polish can cover up.

There’s also the portion of us that can’t resist nibbling away at our nails when we’re stressed, nervous or bored. As an ex-nail biter myself, I know how unattractive it is, but it’s a really tough habit to break. It didn’t matter how many people told me it was unhealthy and downright ugly, I just couldn’t stop myself! So how can we overcome these problems and get the long, gorgeous-looking nails we’ve always wanted? Extensions!

What types of extensions are available at nail salons in Dubai?

Nail extensions come in two varieties, true extensions and overlays. Nail extensions usually involve a light, plastic “plate” being glued to the tip of the nail to add length. Acrylic or gel (these are the most common though other products do exist) is then applied over the top to seal the extension and add strength and shine.

Overlays involve the application of a strengthening mixture (typically acrylic or gel) directly on top of the nail which is built up in thin layers. This adds strength and durability to the nail, as well as an even surface on which to apply polish or other nail art. You can also sculpt extensions out of acrylic on the nail rather than applying a nail tip.

All types of nail extension must be cured in stages with use of a UV lamp. Both acrylic and gel will eventually air dry, but it takes a very long time.

Which should you choose?

If you’re thinking of visiting a nail salon in Dubai for your first nail extensions we’re sure you’re wondering how best to navigate the options. It really comes down to the kind of lifestyle you have and the finish you desire. Both types have their pros and cons so we encourage you to do as much research as possible before you make a final decision.

It’s usually best to sit down with a qualified nail technician who can help you make the right choice, but here’s a general guide to four of the most common types of nail extension:

Acrylic tips

Best for: People who want long-lasting results with extra length. Your natural nails are healthy but short and you want sturdy, beautiful tips. Not recommended for pregnant women due to the chemicals involved.

Gel tips

Best for: People who want a more natural finish with extra length. You’re looking to strengthen, protect and grow your natural nails with minimal damage. You must return to the nail salon for these to be removed.

Acrylic overlays

Best for: People who aren’t necessarily looking to add a lot of length but want a polished, durable finish. You may want to remove them at home. Not recommended for pregnant women due to the chemicals involved.

Gel overlays

Best for: People who want a flexible, natural-looking nail that results in minimal damage. You must return to the nail salon for these to be removed.

Generally, gel options are more expensive than acrylic and tend to look more natural, but many women do prefer the look of acrylic nails. It’s also important to know that after the removal of acrylics your natural nails can feel damaged and brittle, so it’s incredibly important to choose an expert technician at a nail salon in Dubai.
